Perhaps you'd like your teeth to look less yellow, close a small gap, repair a chipped tooth or improve the way your front teeth line up.

There isn't one treatment that works for every concern.

A smile makeover is a personalised dental treatment plan that focuses on the changes you'd like to make to the appearance of your teeth. It might involve a single procedure, such as teeth whitening, or several treatments carried out in stages.

At Dental Suite, your dentist will first examine your teeth, gums and bite before discussing the available options.

This guide explains what a smile makeover involves, which treatments may be suitable for different concerns, how treatment is planned and what it could cost.

Guide

What Is a Smile Makeover?

A smile makeover is a treatment plan designed to improve one or more aspects of how your teeth look.

This may include their:

  • Colour
  • Shape and size
  • Spacing
  • Alignment
  • Overall appearance when you smile

A smile makeover doesn't necessarily mean getting veneers or treating every visible tooth.

For example, someone with healthy but yellowish teeth may only need whitening. Another person may benefit from braces before considering any cosmetic restorations.

The starting point is always your oral health.

If you have untreated tooth decay, gum disease or other dental problems, these need to be assessed and managed before elective cosmetic treatment begins.

Your dentist will also consider how the proposed changes may affect your bite and long-term dental health.

What About a Hollywood Smile?

You may have heard the term Hollywood smile.

It is an informal expression commonly used to describe a bright, uniform-looking smile. It is not a specific dental procedure or clinical diagnosis.

Some people associate it with veneers, but cosmetic changes can involve different types of treatment.

At Dental Suite, your dentist will discuss the shape, shade and appearance you prefer while considering your natural teeth, bite and oral health.

The aim is to develop a realistic treatment plan based on your individual circumstances.

What Would You Like to Change About Your Smile?

You don't need to know which treatment to choose before visiting the dentist.

A useful starting point is simply identifying what you'd like to change.

For example:

  • Yellow or stained teeth: Teeth whitening may be considered.
  • One darker tooth: A separate examination may identify whether internal bleaching or another treatment is appropriate.
  • White spots: Selected enamel white spots may respond to ICON resin infiltration.
  • A chipped tooth: A tooth-coloured filling or composite bonding may be suitable.
  • Small gaps: Bonding, veneers or braces may be considered, depending on the cause and size of the gap.
  • Uneven tooth shapes: Composite bonding or veneers may be discussed.
  • Crooked or crowded teeth: Braces can move teeth into different positions.
  • Broken or heavily damaged teeth: A filling, crown or another restorative treatment may be required.

These are possible options, not a diagnosis.

Why Consider a More Conservative Treatment First?

A smile makeover doesn't always need to involve extensive dental work.

Where clinically appropriate, your dentist may discuss options that preserve more of your natural teeth.

Whitening Before Veneers

If your main concern is tooth colour, professional whitening may be sufficient without covering the teeth with veneers.

Bonding for Small Chips or Gaps

A small chip or gap may sometimes be improved with a tooth-coloured composite restoration, without extensive tooth preparation.

Braces for Crooked Teeth

Braces move teeth into different positions.

Veneers can change how teeth look, but they do not straighten the teeth themselves.

If tooth alignment is the main concern, orthodontic treatment may be more appropriate.

Understanding Irreversible Tooth Preparation

Ceramic veneers and crowns often require removal of some natural tooth structure.

Once enamel has been removed, it cannot grow back.

Your dentist will explain whether such preparation is necessary, along with the possible alternatives, before treatment begins.

Smile Makeover Treatments Available at Dental Suite

Dental Suite offers several treatment options that may be included in a smile makeover plan.

1. Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening uses a whitening agent to lighten the colour of natural teeth.

May be considered for: Yellowish or discoloured natural teeth.

Important to know: Whitening does not change the colour of existing crowns, veneers or fillings. Tooth sensitivity may also occur.

Dental Suite packages:

  • Gold Intro — RM399 (1 cycle)
  • Platinum Advance — RM799 (3 cycles)

Both packages include dental consultation, examination, scaling and polishing.

Related guide: Teeth Whitening

2. Composite Bonding and Composite Veneers

Composite is a tooth-coloured resin material applied and shaped directly onto a tooth.

It can be used to repair small chips, change the appearance of tooth edges or address certain gaps.

May be considered for: Small chips, minor gaps and uneven tooth shapes.

Important to know: Simple bonding procedures and composite veneers at Dental Suite are usually completed in one visit.

Composite may stain, chip or require polishing and repair over time.

Published fees:

  • Small tooth-coloured filling: RM100–RM250
  • Composite veneer: RM400–RM600 per tooth

The appropriate procedure and fee depend on the amount of restoration needed.

3. E-max and Zirconia Veneers

These are custom-made ceramic restorations bonded to the visible front surfaces of selected teeth.

They may improve the shape, size or colour of teeth when simpler treatments are insufficient or unsuitable.

May be considered for: Certain tooth-shape and colour concerns, including selected cases involving several front teeth.

Important to know: Ceramic veneers commonly require some irreversible tooth preparation.

Dental Suite currently plans these treatments over two visits, with approximately one to two weeks of laboratory work.

Published fees:

  • Zirconia: RM1,400–RM1,800 per tooth
  • E-max: RM1,800–RM2,200 per tooth

Related guide: Dental Veneers

4. Dental Crowns

A crown covers most or all of the visible portion of a prepared tooth.

It may help restore a tooth's shape and function when substantial tooth structure has been damaged.

May be considered for: Broken teeth, heavily restored teeth and certain teeth following root canal treatment.

Important to know: A crown generally requires more extensive tooth preparation than a veneer.

A crown should be recommended according to the tooth's restorative needs, not simply as a way to change the appearance of otherwise healthy teeth.

Published fees: RM900–RM2,200 per tooth, depending on material.

Related guide: Dental Crowns

5. Braces

Braces gradually move teeth into planned positions.

May be considered for: Crooked or crowded teeth, gaps and certain bite problems.

Important to know: Orthodontic treatment takes time and requires regular appointments. Retainers are needed after braces to help maintain tooth positions.

Dental Suite conventional braces package:

  • Total package: RM4,500
  • Monthly payment: RM150 for 30 months
  • Zero deposit
  • First RM150 payment counts as Month 1

Extractions, if required, and retainers are charged separately.

6. ICON Resin Infiltration and Internal Bleaching

These are two different procedures for specific types of tooth discolouration.

ICON resin infiltration

ICON uses a resin infiltration technique that may help improve the appearance of selected white spots within tooth enamel.

However, white spots can have different causes and not all are suitable for this treatment.

Published fee: RM500

Internal bleaching

Internal bleaching is a procedure that may be considered when a non-vital tooth has become dark, particularly after root canal treatment.

The dentist must assess the tooth and its previous root canal treatment before deciding whether internal bleaching is appropriate.

Published fee: RM400

For both treatments, the final outcome and suitability depend on the clinical findings.

Why Does the Order of Treatment Matter?

If your smile makeover involves more than one treatment, the sequence needs to be planned carefully.

A typical approach may involve the following stages.

  1. Check and Treat Oral Health Problems

The dentist first examines your teeth, gums and bite.

Problems such as active decay, gum disease or infection may need treatment before cosmetic procedures.

  2. Straighten Teeth if Necessary

If teeth need to move, braces may be recommended before veneers, crowns or other cosmetic restorations are considered.

This allows later restorations to be planned around the resulting tooth positions.

  3. Whiten Natural Teeth When Appropriate

If whitening is part of the plan, it is generally considered before selecting the final shade of veneers, crowns or composite bonding.

The dentist will allow an appropriate period for tooth colour to settle and for subsequent bonding procedures when needed.

  4. Restore or Reshape the Teeth

Composite bonding, veneers or crowns can then be planned according to the agreed treatment goals.

The dentist will consider tooth shape, shade, bite and preservation of natural tooth structure.

  5. Maintain the Results

Your dentist will explain the ongoing care required.

This may include regular dental examinations, cleaning, retainer use after braces or a night guard when clinically appropriate.

Not everyone needs all five stages. Some patients may only require a single procedure.

How Is a Smile Makeover Planned at Dental Suite?

  1. Understanding Your Goals

Your consultation begins with a discussion about what you'd like to change.

You can also explain what you would prefer to keep, any concerns about your natural teeth, and your budget or time preferences.

  2. Dental Examination

The dentist assesses your teeth, gums, existing dental restorations and bite.

Photographs, X-rays or other records may be taken when clinically necessary.

  3. Digital Smile Design

For suitable cases, Dental Suite uses digital smile design as a planning and communication tool.

Using photographs and relevant dental records, your dentist can create a digital illustration of possible changes to tooth shape, size or proportions.

This may help you understand and discuss the proposed appearance before treatment proceeds.

However, a digital simulation is not a guarantee of the final result. Actual outcomes depend on tooth structure, the treatment chosen and individual clinical factors.

Digital smile design fee: Included in the consultation.

  4. Your Treatment Plan and Fees

The dentist will explain the proposed treatments, their sequence, possible alternatives, expected appointments, costs and maintenance considerations.

Treatment proceeds only after the plan has been discussed and you have agreed to it.

  5. Treatment and Review

Your planned treatment may be completed in one visit or over several stages.

The dentist will review your progress and explain any follow-up care needed.

How Much Does a Smile Makeover Cost at Dental Suite?

There is no single fixed price for a smile makeover.

The total cost depends on the treatments included in your plan and the number of teeth involved.

For some patients, the plan may involve only whitening or a small restoration. Others may require several procedures over a longer period.

Example Smile Makeover Plans

The examples below illustrate how treatment costs may be calculated. They are not recommendations that these treatments are necessary for any particular patient.

Example 1: Whitening and Two Composite Veneers

A person with yellowish teeth and two chipped front teeth may be assessed for whitening followed by composite restorations.

  • Gold Intro whitening: RM399
  • Two composite veneers: RM800–RM1,200

Estimated total: RM1,199–RM1,599

The whitening package includes consultation. Additional separately chargeable consultations or treatment, if applicable, would be explained beforehand.

A smaller chip might be suitable for a simpler filling instead of a veneer.

Example 2: Braces Followed by Whitening

For someone who needs orthodontic treatment and also wants to improve tooth colour after braces:

  • Conventional braces package: RM4,500
  • Gold Intro whitening after braces: RM399

Estimated total: RM4,899

Retainers, any required extractions and other additional treatment are not included in this example.

The whitening would be considered at an appropriate stage after orthodontic treatment.

Example 3: Six E-max Veneers

For a case where six upper front teeth are assessed as suitable for E-max veneers:

  • Six E-max veneers: RM10,800–RM13,200
  • Separate general consultation, if applicable: RM40–RM100

Estimated total: RM10,840–RM13,300, assuming a separate consultation charge applies.

A night guard may be recommended for some patients at an additional published fee of RM600.

The number of veneers must be based on clinical needs and the patient's informed decision, not simply the desired appearance.

Can Treatment Be Done in Stages?

Yes, when clinically appropriate.

For example, a dentist might recommend completing oral health treatment first, followed by whitening, and later considering composite bonding or veneers.

Staged treatment can allow time for healing, shade changes and review between procedures.

Your dentist will explain which stages are needed and the fees involved.

Payment Options

Dental Suite offers payment arrangements through Atome, Grab PayLater, SPayLater and credit card instalment plans.

Availability, eligibility and repayment terms depend on the provider.

For patients using ASP Medical Group, PMCare or MedKad, coverage should be checked directly with the clinic and panel provider. Elective cosmetic treatment may not be included in some benefit plans.

Guide

How Long Do Smile Makeover Results Last?

The duration of a smile makeover result depends on the procedures involved.

No treatment outcome can be guaranteed to remain unchanged indefinitely.

Teeth Whitening

Whitening effects may gradually reduce as teeth become discoloured again over time.

Food and drink habits, smoking and oral hygiene can affect how long the tooth shade is maintained.

Composite Bonding

Composite restorations may become stained, chipped or worn.

Depending on their condition, they may be polished, repaired or replaced.

Ceramic Veneers and Crowns

Ceramic restorations can remain functional for many years in suitable circumstances, but they can also chip, loosen or require replacement.

Braces

After orthodontic treatment, retainers are important for helping maintain the new tooth positions.

Your dentist will explain the appropriate retention plan.

How to Maintain Your Results

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth every day.
  • Avoid biting very hard objects or using teeth to open packaging.
  • Follow retainer or night guard instructions when applicable.
  • Attend regular dental check-ups.
Guide

Is a Smile Makeover Suitable for Everyone?

Not necessarily.

Your dentist may recommend treating existing dental problems first, postponing elective treatment or considering a different approach if:

  • You have untreated decay or gum disease.
  • You grind or clench your teeth.
  • There is insufficient healthy tooth structure for the planned restoration.
  • Your bite needs assessment or correction.
  • The change you want cannot be achieved predictably with the available treatments.

Your dentist will explain what is clinically appropriate after an examination.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Smile Makeovers

Do I Need Veneers for a Smile Makeover?

No.

Some smile makeover plans use whitening, composite bonding or braces without any ceramic veneers.

The appropriate treatment depends on your dental condition and what you would like to change.

Will My Natural Teeth Need to Be Shaved Down?

It depends on the treatment.

Whitening does not require tooth preparation. Some bonding procedures may require little or no enamel removal.

Ceramic veneers and crowns commonly require some tooth preparation. Any enamel removed does not grow back.

Your dentist will explain this before treatment.

Can I Whiten My Teeth After Having Veneers or Bonding?

Whitening agents lighten natural tooth structure but do not whiten composite, veneers or crowns in the same way.

If whitening is part of your plan, it is often considered before the final colour of restorations is selected.

Can Veneers Fix Crooked Teeth?

Veneers may change how mildly uneven teeth appear, but they do not move teeth.

Braces may be more appropriate if the position of your teeth needs to be corrected.

How Long Does a Smile Makeover Take?

It depends on the treatment.

Whitening may be completed in one visit. Simple bonding and composite veneer treatment at Dental Suite are also usually completed in one appointment.

Laboratory-made veneers generally involve two visits and laboratory time. Braces treatment can take considerably longer.

Your dentist will explain the expected timeline.

Will My Smile Look Artificial?

The appearance depends on the treatments, materials, tooth shapes and shades selected.

Your dentist will discuss your preferred appearance and explain what may be achievable.

Digital smile design may help illustrate proposed changes, but it cannot guarantee the final result.

Is a Smile Makeover Permissible in Islam?

The answer depends on the procedure and its purpose.

For questions concerning veneers, Dental Suite's Dental Veneers Guide includes a reference to the Federal Territory Mufti's Office.

For individual religious guidance, consult the relevant religious authority.

Can Veneers Be Fitted at a Beauty Salon?

Veneers are dental restorations requiring clinical assessment and treatment planning.

In Malaysia, clinical dental treatment must be carried out by appropriately registered and authorised dental practitioners.
